Home Fire Safety Do’s & Don’ts

Family Fire Safety

  • Make sure that everyone knows two ways out of every room.
  • Teach children to crawl on their hands and knees in an effort to stay low under smoke.
  • Close doors behind you to slow the spread of fire and smoke.
  • Plan a meeting spot outside the house, at a neighbor’s or in a special place in the yard a good distance from the house.
  • Teach kids that once they get outside, they should stay outside.
  • Hold frequent fire drills, including some at night and make sure everyone is following the plan perfectly. Assign someone to call 911.
  • Smoke alarms save lives.
  • Install a smoke alarm outside each sleeping area and on each additional level of your home. Replace the batteries every six months.

  • Do not rely on one way to escape from your home.
  • Do not forget about the levels of your home. Consider escape ladders for sleeping areas on the second and third floor.
  • Do not assume everyone will remember how to exit your home during a fire. Practice your escape plan at least twice a year.
  • Do not reenter a burning building. Nothing is as valuable as your life.
  • Do not open a door without feeling it first. If it is warm, the fire is nearby and you could cause the greater risk of spreading the fire and injuring yourself.

Massachusetts Junior Operator Law

My name is Kevin Johnson and I am a Massachusetts insurance agent.

I have 3 boys, ages: 9, 8 and 6. Two have driven go-carts, the other only as a passenger. None of them have their MA licenses.

I do, however, have 3 nephews that have got their MA licenses over the past 18 months.

All of them are insured with our Agency.

Not only do I feel bad for my brother and sister-in-law because of premiums and safety concerns, I also, selfishly, worry about loss ratios.

It’s important for new drivers to learn the rules of the road and how to drive, it’s also important for parents to understand the Massachusetts Junior Operator Law.

Per the RMV website:

“Obtaining your license is a milestone that is often marked by excitement and at times fear. Your parent or guardian may not have to drive you to the movies or your friends’ houses anymore, but you also have a set of rules to obey that are designed to ease your way into driving until you have gained the necessary behind the wheel experience that will make you a safe driver who is both aware and vigilant ….”

I can see my nephews’ eyes begin to cloud over.

MA JOL Highlights

No person holding a junior operator’s license shall operate a motor vehicle during the first 6 months of licensure while a person under 18 years of age, other than the operator or an immediate family member of the operator, is present in the vehicle unless also accompanied by another person, duly licensed by his state of residence, who is at least 21 years of age with at least 1 year of driving experience and who is occupying a seat beside the driver. A junior operator who violates this paragraph shall have his license suspended for 60 days for a first offense, for 180 days for a second offense and for 1 year for a third or subsequent offense. The suspension shall be imposed in addition to any other penalty, fine, suspension, revocation or requirement that may be imposed for such violation. A junior operator whose license is suspended for a second or subsequent violation of this paragraph shall not be eligible for license reinstatement until he also completes a program selected by the registrar that encourages attitudinal changes in young drivers who have committed a violation of the motor vehicle laws. The passenger restriction provided in this paragraph shall be tolled during any suspension or revocation of a person’s junior operator’s license. The registrar may exempt a junior operator from the passenger restriction if the junior operator is an emancipated minor.

No person holding a junior operator’s license shall operate a motor vehicle between the hours of 12:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The holder of a junior operator’s license shall have the license in his possession at all times when operating a motor vehicle. A junior operator who violates the time restriction provided in this paragraph shall be deemed to be operating a motor vehicle without being duly licensed under this chapter. In addition to the penalty provided in section 10, the license of a junior operator deemed to be operating a motor vehicle without being duly licensed shall be suspended for 60 days for a first offense, for 180 days for a second offense and for 1 year for a third or subsequent offense; provided, however, that for such operation between the hours of 12:30 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. and between 4:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., this paragraph shall be enforced by law enforcement agencies only when a junior operator has been lawfully stopped for a violation of the motor vehicles laws or for some other offense. A junior operator whose license is suspended for a second or subsequent violation of this paragraph shall not be eligible for license reinstatement until he also completes a program selected by the registrar that encourages attitudinal changes in young drivers who have committed a violation of the motor vehicle laws. The registrar may exempt a junior operator from the time restriction if the junior operator is an emancipated minor.

MA Auto Policy: Optional Coverage

MA Auto Insurance: Optional Coverage

Parts 5 – 12 of the Massachusetts Auto Policy are known as “Optional Coverage.”

Let’s take a quick look see:

Part 5, Optional Bodily Injury to Others – Extends your liability protection (the basic $20,000/$40,000 limits under Bodily Injury to Others) up to the amount you purchase under this part. This option of Massachusetts Auto Insurance provides coverage for accidents beyond Massachusetts to anywhere in the United States, its territories or possessions, or Canada. This coverage also pays for damages suffered by guests in your auto.

Part 6, Medical Payments –  Covers medical expenses for you, your household members and passengers, over and above amounts covered by Personal Injury Protection no matter who caused the accident. The minimum amount of Massachusetts Auto Insurance you can buy is $5,000 if insuring an automobile and $500 if insuring a motorcycle.

Part 7, Collision Coverage – Pays for collision damage to your auto, less any applicable deductible, no matter who causes the accident. If your car is financed, your lender may require this coverage as well as a particular deductible amount.

Part 8, Limited Collision – Also pays for collision damage to your car. You must not be more than 50% at fault and the owner of the other vehicle must be identified. Get limited collision with Massachusetts Auto Insurance today.

Part 9, Comprehensive Coverage –  Pays for damage to or loss of your car, less any applicable deductible, resulting from perils such as fire, theft, vandalism, and striking an animal, but not collision. this coverage allows up to$ 15 a day (to a limit of$ 450) for substitute transportation (rental or other transportation costs including taxi, bus and train fare) until your stolen auto is recovered. personal property is not covered unless it is permanently installed in your car, such as a tape deck. If your car is financed, your lender may require this Mass Auto Insurance coverage.

Part 10, Subsitute Transportation – Reimburses up to $15 a day for car rental or transportation costs including taxi, bus and train fare (up to $450), while your car is undergoing collision or covered repairs. Coverage of up to $100 a day (up to a limit of $3,000) is available for an additional cost.

Part 11, Towing & Labor –  Pays up to $50 for towing and labor charges each time your auto breaks down whether or not there is an accident involved. You are covered only for the on-site labor costs at the breakdown site (not any parts) needed to get your car running again. Massachusetts Auto Insurance coverage of up to $100 per disablement is available for additional cost.

Part 12, Underinsured Motorist Coverage –  Pays for bodily injury damages to you, household members and passengers, unless they have a policy of their own, or are covered by an Auto Insurancepolicy of another household member with similar coverage. The accident must be caused by someone without enough bodily injury coverage. MA insurance pays you up to the difference between the total amount collected from the bodily injury liability insurance covering the owner and driver of the other car, and the limits you purchased for this coverage.

MA Auto Insurance and renting a vehicle on vacation

Renting a vehicle on vacation: MA Auto Insurance

Our Massachusetts insurance agency gets quite a few phone calls regarding insurance coverage when renting a vehicle on vacation.

Do you need to buy additional insurance coverage when renting a vehicle?

The answer is … it depends.

The Massachusetts auto insurance policy states:

“Compulsory Bodily Injury To Others (Part 1) only covers accidents in Massachusetts. All the other Parts provide coverage for accidents and losses which happen in the United States or Canada. We consider United States territories and possessions and Puerto Rico to be part of the United States. We will pay for accidents and losses which happen while your auto is being transported between ports of the United States and Canada. Your auto is not covered in any other country.”

“Your Auto – means:

A. The vehicle or vehicles described on the Coverage Selections Page.

B. Any auto while used as a temporary substitute for the described auto while that auto is out of normal use because of a breakdown, repair, servicing, loss or destruction.

So, long story short: if you have “full” coverage for your vehicle on a Massachusetts private passenger auto policy, coverage will apply to the rental vehicle as long as you are in the United States (possessions, territories including Puerto Rico) or Canada.
