Stay Safe During Summer – Fall Storms

Massachusetts is known for our erratic weather. This is the season when high winds and lightning can combine to wreak havoc in our area, especially if they cause trees to topple and electric lines to fall.

There are just three words to remember if you ever see a power line lying on the ground: Don’t touch it!

If you see a power line on the ground or anywhere else it does not belong, call 911!

To stay safe, follow these safety rules:

Never assume that a downed line is a cable television or telephone wire. Assume every wire is dangerous – it could save your life.

Do not drive over downed power lines.

Do not touch downed power lines or use any object – including brooms, boards, limbs or plastic to move them. Never step in water that is touching a downed wire.

Never touch a person in contact with a power line or an object that’s touching the wires. Do not touch a person who has been shocked by a power line.

Do not try to cut or remove a tree that is entangled with power lines.

If you are involved in an accident that results in a power line touching your car, do not get out of your car unless it is on fire. In case of a fire, jump clear of the car and land on both feet. Warn people to stay away form your car.

Do not approach a car that is touching power lines. Keep the victim in the vehicle and wait for emergency personnel to handle the situation.

When Buying a Car in Massachusetts …

Massachusetts is a “title” state. This means that the person or dealer you purchase your car from must sign over the title to you before you attach your plates and take the car home … even though the dealer may be going to the Registry of Motor Vehicles for you. An insurance stamp is also required before going to the RMV.

Once your vehicle is registered, you have seven days to complete the annual, MA inspection sticker ($29).

MA Auto Insurance Tips For Teen Drivers

Safe driving is everyone’s responsibility. Consider that over half of all motor vehicle accidents could be avoided if drivers make intelligent driving decisions. As new drivers, you are most at risk because you lack the experience (and sometimes the maturity) to make intelligent decisions at critical times. Strive to form good driving habits early, and they’ll last a (long) lifetime!

We want to help you think about things that you can do to make your driving as safe as possible. Consider the following:

Consider these sobering statistics on MASSACHUSETTS teen driving:

  • Automobile accidents are the number one killer of our nation’s youth.
  • Drivers under the age of 20 were involved in 13% of all accidents, yet they account for only 5% of all drivers.
  • 5,000 teenagers die each year from auto accidents.
  • Alcohol is responsible for almost half of all teen motor vehicle deaths.
  • 25% of all teen accidents involve speeding.
  • Half of all teenage traffic fatalities occur between 6:00 p.m. Friday and 3:00 a.m. Sunday.
  • In one year, drivers 19 and under were involved in close to 3 million motor vehicle accidents.
  • The price of a bad decision can include injury to yourself or others, loss of life, loss of life style or loss of personal freedom.

Ways to prevent MA AUTO accidents

While no one has full control over the circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle accident, there are things that can be done to reduce your chances of being the cause or being involved in one. Here are some smart decisions you can make while you’re behind the wheel:

  • Drive defensively. If you assume that other drivers are not as skilled and thoughtful as you are, you will instinctively become more careful and cautious when on the road.
  • Try not to speed. When you speed, you have less time to react, less time to make the right decision.
  • Never drink and drive. Alcohol can seriously impair your decision-making skills and reaction time.
  • Take the keys away from friends who have been drinking.
  • Adults can set an example by practicing safe driving habits.

Ways to keep MA AUTO insurance premiums for teens as low as possible

A number of factors are taken into consideration when insurance companies set rates for automobile policies. Among those factors are the type of vehicle and the age, gender and driving record of the insured. Companies pay close attention to the number of accidents a driver has had and the traffic tickets (from speeding, running a stop sign, etc.) received. In their view, past performance serves as a meter for future behavior — therefore, these drivers pose a higher risk.

Massachusetts “At Fault” Accidents

In Massachusetts the best way to save money on auto insurance is by driving safely, maintaining a clean driving record, and paying your auto insurance premiums.

Unfortunately, accidents do happen, which is why, ultimately, we all carry auto insurance.

Insurance companies utilize 20 Standards of Fault when determining fault in auto accident in Massachusetts.

They include:

  • Collision with a lawfully or an unlawfully parked vehicle
  • Rear end collision
  • Out of lane collision
  • Failure to signal
  • Failure to proceed with due caution from a traffic control signal or sign
  • Collision on wrong side of road
  • Operating in the wrong direction
  • Collision at an uncontrolled intersection
  • Collision while in the process of backing up
  • Collision while making a left turn or a U-turn across the travel path of a vehicle travelling in the same or opposite direction
  • Leaving or exiting from a parked position, a parking lot, an alley or driveway
  • Opened or opening vehicle door(s)
  • Single-vehicle collision
  • Failure to obey the rules and regulations for driving
  • Unattended vehicle collision
  • Collision while merging onto a highway or into a rotary
  • Non-contact operator causing collision
  • Failure to yield the right of way to emergency vehicles when required by law
  • Collision at a “T” intersection (you entered from a side road)

Financial Tips

In this past Boston Sunday Globe’s Business Section, Michelle Singletary writes a book review of Jack Otter’s Worth It … Not Worth It? Simple & Profitable Answers to Life’s Tough Financial Questions.

Within her article she highlights the following practical tips:

New or used car? A car loses a whole lot of value in its first two years of life, and the smart-money move is to let someone else pay that depreciation.”

Buy or lease a car? Buying a car is a better deal than leasing … Leasing a car is like always going to the more expensive restaurant.

Stock or mutual fund? It’s no contest: mutual fund. Reasons not to buy invdividual stocks: The deck is stacked against you.”

Take or decline the rental car insurance? One word: Decline. If you want to be polite, make it, ‘Decline, thank you.’

Term Life insurance or permanent life insurance? You need a term policy. The bottom line is this: Permanent life insurance is a lousy investment for 99 percent of the population.”

MA Term Life Insurance

We recommended term life insurance when it comes to family protection.

It’s the simplest, most affordable, & most pure type of life insurance product.

The concept is:  you decide on a face value and a term for your life insurance policy.

The term can be: 10 year term, 20 year term or 30 year term. The longer the term, the more expensive the annual premium.

Face values for the life insurance policy typically range from $250,000 to $500,000 to $1,000,000 and more.
